Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase– Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today, we commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. An influential leader in the civil rights movement, he helped to fight for equality through non-violent methods, using the power of his words. Although his life was cut short, his legacy lives on.
Growing up I was fortunate enough to be raised in a family that valued people for who they were. Different skin color, religious beliefs and sexual orientations were acknowledged and appreciated, but labels were irrelevant. Celebrating our differences and learning from each other is what life is all about. I am grateful to be able to pass this lesson on to my daughter.
What I admire most about Dr. King is that he had the courage to stand up for what he believed in, regardless of the obstacles that stood in his way. He understood that in order for change to happen, he had to be proactive, and used faith as a motivator to accomplish his goals. I am grateful for his ongoing influence in our world and honor him for his works.
