This coming weekend is very big deal for my family…my little brother is getting married.  I mean, he’s not actually little anymore.  In fact, he is a big, brave, soldier, brother, but no matter how tall or strong he gets, he will always be younger (age is really all I have on him anymore…).

And what is even more exciting about this weekend, is that I get to welcome to my family, another sister, Koko.  I couldn’t be more proud of Quincy’s choice of bride.  Beautiful, intelligent and just plain fun.  I have known Koko since we were younger and I have always been a fan (which to be honest, isn’t an easy feat with me.  I tend to be VERY overprotective of my bro, but Koko won me over immediately).  So having them make their union “official” is really just the icing on the cake.

What's in the Box? #69 - In Her Chucks

You know you have been brainwashed by a member of your CSA for too long when you start getting excited about beets.  At the beginning of my CSA journey, I used to loathe beets.  But the truth is, I just didn’t know what to do with them.  Now, with a pretty extensive beet recipe repertoire, I can’t get enough of them.  The last few times I have gotten a bunch of fresh beets in my box, I have made this amazing Roasted Beets with Gorgonzola and Walnuts salad.  I was watching the Barefoot Contessa on TV the other day (the silver lining to having a sick baby…lots of down time), and she was whipping up a Balsamic Roasted Beet Salad that had me drooling.  But on the other hand, that Flourless Beet Cake has me intrigued as well.  Since when is there not enough beets to curb my cravings?  Official produce nerd :)

And then of course you have the asparagus, which is already gone.  We devoured it alongside homemade turkey meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner Tuesday night.  Comfort food at it’s finest.  And for dessert?  Fresh fruit.  Strawberries, kiwi and tangerines.  Sliced.  That’s it.  There really is nothing sweeter.

For the gorgeous head of lettuce I am going to draw from some of Meghan’s delicious ideas.  And to add to the fun, I am sure some of those carrots will end up in my salad somehow too.

It has been a while since I have roasted cauliflower.  It really is my favorite way to prepare it.  So simple but totally irresistible.

And finally, spring onions.  Nothing fancy I’m sure.  But Freddie will love me if I sneak them into his eggs.  Such a good wife am I :)

    I so well know that look. My mom still gives it to me (and she’s in her 80s!). I’m glad you listened to your mom and went to bed–but I’m pretty psyched that you added your photo first.
    Your asparagus reminds me that I saw 2 pickled asparagus recipes on food blogs yesterday–Simple Bites and Putney Farm. I keep hearing about making a grain free pizza crust using cauliflower, but haven’t needed to give up grains yet so I prefer roasting it.
    I have a pile of carrots in my fridge left over from an end-of-sports pizza party and debated doing something with them (carrot-flavored crust?) but in the end we’ll probably just eat them plain (my daughter) or dunked in hummus (the rest). Seeing the kiwi reminds me of Kitchen Parade’s recent post on pork chops (the kiwi used to be known as the Chinese gooseberry before rebranding). Now I want a pork chop. Right–your lovely beets again I’m on about the pickling, and I threw the last of the frozen beet greens (good for nothing other than this) into a blueberry lemon smoothie for the family a couple of days ago. I’m going to assume the strawberries are already gone, since they are so yummy and you’ve got family in town.
    Oh–and the spring onions? It’s spring here and my garlic/shallot/onion bed, planted last fall, has perked up and is the greenest thing in the garden. Yay! Makes me want to make a spring onion and hard-cooked egg salad. That’s my favorite dish in the first weeks of my CSA.

    Right, now that I’m drooling all over my keyboard because of YOUR farm share, let me tell you what I linked up.
    Monday was Food Bloggers Against Hunger, and I dedicated my post to inspire action to end hunger in America. And shared my Spam Musubi Chirashi Sushi recipe, too.
    That same plain carrot-eating daughter, my baby girl, is now a teenager. She learned how to cook with Bok Choy in school, and I’m sharing her Fried Rice with Greens and Chicken recipe here (as well as some cooking with kids suggestions).
    Lastly, a pizza. I went easy on the family for the sake of my guinea pig, Crystal, and made a Mango, Pepperoni, Yellow Pepper and Red Onion pizza. The moms at wheelchair basketball named it a Sunset Pizza for me.

    I got my first spring season CSA box on Wednesday with spinach, arugula, box choy, romaine lettuce, onions and more. I no longer have to be envious of you and your weekly postings. I’ve been salivating for months.

    I like to take the cauliflower and make a soup with it and two kinds of peppers. Jalapenos make it hot and spicy.

    Everything looks fantastic! Spring onions are my favorite – cut them in half and throw them on the grill with a little olive oil, salt and pepper…yum!!
